Are you interested in on-going support as you navigate language arts with your child?
This weekly program for elementary will use ‘Balanced Literacy’ strategies to support literacy learning at home. Children will participate in variety of language arts activities; early literacy learners will focus on reading comprehension strategies and beginning writing skills. More advanced literacy learners will focus primarily on writing including the use of Information and Communication Technology.
In a supportive learning community, students will benefit from teacher modeling, shared and guided reading, shared and guided writing and discussions. In an effort to support language learning at home, there will be opportunities for on-going dialogue and support between participating parents and teachers, and there may be follow-up activities for older students.
This program is available to students in Parent Teacher, Blended and Fully Provided programs. Maximum class size is 16.

Reading focus - All aboard for a journey to new worlds through children’s literature in these 2 hour classes based on the Edmonton Public Schools ‘Balanced Literacy’ program (Alberta language arts curriculum). Be introduced to a variety of literary genres and explore new reading comprehension strategies in a whole group teacher-directed setting. Learn to respond to ‘Retell’, ‘Relate’ and ‘Reflect’ prompts orally, pictorially and in writing. Destination ‘Making Words’ will have participants using phonics and patterns to become world class spellers. Bring along one of your favorite books from home on the first day of classes to help us LIFT- OFF to literacy! |

Writing focus - Stay ‘write on’ course in these 2¼ hour teacher-directed classes that address components of the Alberta language arts curriculum. Exercise your writing muscles and let your imagination soar through free writing. Join other young writers as an audience member, or reader at the Literacy Café. Plan your writing destinations using structured organizers. Remember to pack some creative juices for our LIFT-OFF to literacy!
Note: Students` batteries will be recharged in a 15 minute indoor or outdoor energy break during each class. (Appropriate clothing required for weekly activity.) |

This weekly program for grade 3 and 4 students will teach strategies to support student writing. Students will participate in variety of language arts activities with a focus on writing and the use of Information and Communication Technology.
In a supportive learning community, students will benefit from sharing and discussions with peers, teacher modeling, and guided writing, with a focus on the 6 Traits of Writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. |
