French and Spanish
All full program students in grades 4 -7 across the province of Alberta are now required to take a second language. In order to best fulfill Alberta Education’s mandate, the onsite Spanish Language and Culture and the onsite French as a Second Language will be structured to meet the Alberta Program of Studies curriculum objectives. Due to the communicative nature of language learning, these programs will be offered weekly at the Argyll Centre and require exemplary attendance and take home pieces. Registration in the appropriate curriculum level onsite program is completed on the blue Argyll Supplemental Registration form.
For more information on second language options please refer to the Second Language Program Choices Guide.
Students not addressing a second language through a teacher-directed (APS) program are encouraged to also participate in the weekly language onsite programs. This registration process is happening now. Contact the Registration Department for more information.
French as a Second Language
Do you want your children to communicate and empathize in a second language, and not just study and parrot it? Join our French program and they will be speaking new words in meaningful context on day one! Our base teaching methodology known as Accelerative Integrated Method (AIM) uses gestures (talking with hands), music, theater stories, dance, and paired-down frequent-word language manipulation activities (oral & written) to help students learn. The premise is that they retain the language when they do something fun that goes along with it. Within the framework of this multidimensional approach to learning, all components to help the students communicate are emphasized—listening & reading comprehension, oral & written production, and meta-cognitive strategies. Students will spend part of the lesson block engaged in a variety of cultural experiences and collaborative communication games, songs, grammar raps, and interactive media materials for thematic units to strengthen their skills. An all-day event such as Winter Carnaval, Bûcherons, restaurant outing, or another event might be included. Students from all formats of educational programming are welcome. Some weekly home review is required (DVD, student activity book, regular handouts, newsletters, and websites supplied). Regular attendance is required to ensure success.

Spanish Language and Culture
For the onsite Spanish program, there are two sets of materials. One is for grades four through six. The materials are from ADLC. These materials form the basis of the program. The program follows the Alberta Program of Studies. The program for grades seven to nine will use another set of materials. These materials are in a website from Spain and are interactive in nature. These also follow the Alberta Program of Studies. However, the courses will be more that just that. Videos, interactive online activities, classroom integrations, projects, demonstrations and games will be included, It is expected that all students will do work at home so that the learning of the language will be reinforced between the weekly classes.
