Who Can Attend Argyll Centre?

Residency Guidelines

As a school in Alberta, Argyll Centre is mandated under the Province of Alberta School Act. To define Resident Student, the Provision of Educational and Associated Services section 44 (1) states:

44 (1) Subject to this section, a student is a resident student of the board of the district or division, as the case may be, in which the student’s parent resides.

To clarify “…in which the student’s parent resides”, the School Act defines Residence as:

Residence
  1. For the purposes of this Act, the place of residence of a person is governed by the following:
    1. a person can have only one place of residence;
    2. a person’s residence is the place where that person ordinarily lives and sleeps and to which, when absent from the residence, that person intends to return;
    3. when a person leaves a district, division or unorganized territory, as the case may be, with the intention of becoming resident somewhere other than in that district, division or territory, that person’s residence in that district, division or unorganized territory ceases;
    4. when a person leaves Alberta with the intention of residing outside Alberta, that person’s residence in Alberta ceases.

In accordance with the School Act, students who reside in Alberta may register at the Argyll Centre. For Elementary and Junior High students, registration at the Argyll Centre runs from August 17-September 30. Students need to be in Alberta and available to meet with school staff during this period. During this registration process, a teacher will work with students to gather resources, structure programming and set up an Individual Education Plan.

Students not in Alberta during this time are unable to register at the Argyll Centre. These students may purchase curriculum resources and continue to address the Alberta Program of Studies but their registration obligations are under the province/country in which they reside.
